Togo Eyes More Electricity Supply from Nigeria
Omoyeni Olabode

The Republic of Togo has indicated plans to increase its electricity imports from Nigeria in a bid to strengthen power supply and meet rising energy demand.
The request highlights Nigeria’s strategic role as a key electricity supplier to several West African countries through bilateral agreements and regional power arrangements.
Nigeria currently exports electricity to neighbouring countries including Togo, Benin, and Niger, with power generated by grid-connected generation companies and transmitted across borders.
However, industry reports have shown that some of these international customers have struggled with timely payments for electricity supplied. Data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission indicated that Togo, Niger and Benin were invoiced $18.69m for electricity in the third quarter of 2025, but remitted only $7.125m, leaving a significant outstanding balance.
Despite these challenges, cross-border electricity trade remains an important component of the West African regional power market, helping neighbouring countries supplement their domestic energy production.
