A crowd surge disrupted the distribution of empowerment items during the Renewed Hope South-East Youth Tour held in Owerri, Imo State, with several items reportedly carted away by participants.
The event, organised by the City Boy Movement, attracted thousands of youths, entrepreneurs, community leaders and stakeholders from across the South-East region.
According to a statement issued by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Emana-Amawhe, the two-day programme began with a policy summit that brought together youth leaders, policy experts, entrepreneurs and public officials to discuss governance, enterprise development and access to finance.
The summit also examined the role of young Nigerians in promoting economic growth and contributing to national development.
On the second day, the programme featured an empowerment rally aimed at supporting youth enterprise and promoting engagement with the government’s Renewed Hope agenda. However, the distribution of empowerment items was disrupted when the large crowd surged toward the designated distribution area.
Organisers said the process had initially begun in an orderly manner before some participants breached barricades set up to coordinate the exercise, allowing members of the crowd to access the remaining items before the structured distribution could be completed.
Despite the disruption, the City Boy Movement described the programme as successful, noting that the large turnout demonstrated strong interest among young Nigerians in empowerment initiatives and development programmes.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to youth engagement and grassroots participation in national development, adding that the response in Owerri highlighted the role of youths in shaping Nigeria’s future.
