Tinubu Meets Catholic Archbishop Kaigama Amid U.S. Claims of Christian Persecution

Tinubu, Catholic Archbishop Kaigama

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday hosted the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Although details of their discussion were not disclosed, the meeting comes days after former U.S. President Donald Trump alleged that Christians were being targeted in Nigeria and threatened possible military intervention.

In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the Nigerian government was ignoring attacks on Christians, warning that the U.S. could “go in guns blazing” and cut off aid if the situation persisted. The comments drew global reactions and prompted Tinubu to defend Nigeria’s record on religious rights.

In a statement shared on X, Tinubu insisted the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, adding that his administration has maintained open dialogue with Christian and Muslim leaders to enhance national peace and security.

He rejected what he called foreign narratives portraying Nigeria as intolerant, stressing that such claims do not reflect the country’s reality or government efforts to protect all religious groups. Tinubu also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with international partners, including the United States, to safeguard religious freedom and promote mutual understanding.
