TG Omori Opens Up on Failed Kidney Transplant and Ongoing Search for a Compatible Donor

Nigerian music video director and cinematographer ThankGod Omori, popularly known as TG Omori, has shared an account of his ongoing health battle, revealing the physical and emotional weight of a failed kidney transplant that left his younger brother living with only one kidney.
Speaking during an in-depth interview on the Afropolitan Podcast, the creative director opened up about his prolonged battle with kidney failure, which involved months of hospitalisation, rigorous dialysis sessions costing hundreds of thousands of Naira weekly, and a grueling nine-month search for a suitable organ donor.

After multiple potential donors were ruled out due to incompatibility, Omori’s younger brother stepped forward to donate his own kidney. However, following a complex seven-hour surgery at a Lagos hospital, medical personnel discovered that Omori’s body rejected the transplanted organ due to a lack of blood flow, forcing doctors to surgically remove the kidney and return the director to emergency dialysis.

“It took about nine months to get a donor. When it was becoming a struggle, my brother decided to donate... We went in and came out, and my body was not accepting it after like seven hours of surgery. It was removed successfully, but I had to go back on dialysis and wait to heal before searching for another donor. My brother only has one kidney now, even though he can live with one—that’s another angle that is deeply traumatising.”

The director emphasized the severe financial and mental strain associated with renal care in Nigeria, noting that routine dialysis treatment alone can cost up to ₦600,000 per week, making the medical crisis virtually insurmountable without strong financial backing and support networks. Describing his recovery journey as a test of faith and resilience, Omori expressed profound gratitude for his brother's selfless sacrifice while remaining hopeful as he continues the search for a fully compatible donor to undergo a second transplant procedure.
