Tanzania Cancels Independence Day Celebrations After Election Unrest

The government of Tanzania has cancelled this year’s planned Independence Day celebrations, citing widespread damage and unrest following the October 29 general election. The national holiday — scheduled for December 9 — will no longer be marked by parades or official festivities.

According to the announcement made by Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba, funds originally allocated for the celebrations will be redirected toward rebuilding public infrastructure damaged during post-election protests and violence. The government said this step is necessary to prioritise national recovery.

The decision follows calls by opposition groups and civil society to use Independence Day as a day of protest over alleged mass killings and electoral malpractice. The government said the cancellation is also meant to prevent further unrest on the sensitive anniversary.

Many Tanzanians have reacted with mixed feelings — some view the move as a necessary show of solidarity and focus on rebuilding, while others see it as an attempt to suppress legitimate protest and national mourning. What do you think? Share your views in the comments.
