Former President Jonathan Among African Leaders Stranded in Guinea-Bissau After Coup

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is among several African leaders currently trapped in Guinea-Bissau following a military coup that has disrupted the country’s election and closed its borders.
Jonathan is part of a 36-member delegation from African Union (AU), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and West African Elders Forum (WAEF), which traveled to Guinea-Bissau to observe the presidential election held on 23 November 2025.
On Wednesday, military officers declared a takeover, suspended the electoral process, shut down airports and land borders, and imposed curfews — effectively preventing Jonathan and other observers from leaving the country.
In a joint statement, the observers condemned the coup, calling it deeply regrettable especially since both leading candidates had assured them of respecting the will of the people. They called on AU and ECOWAS to urgently restore constitutional order and demand the release of detained officials.
