Hit-and-run, Dispatch rider, Tanker Driver, Lagos, Killed

A tragic hit-and-run incident has claimed the life of a dispatch rider along the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway in Lagos, after a fully loaded diesel tanker rammed into his motorcycle and fled the scene.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, revealing that the crash occurred under the Cele Bridge corridor. According to the agency, the tanker, identified as a HOWO vehicle, “violently rammed” into the dispatch rider, trapping him beneath the truck.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the impact. Emergency responders swiftly secured the area, cordoning it off with safety measures to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of other road users.

Authorities disclosed that the tanker driver fled immediately after the incident, abandoning the vehicle, which has since been impounded by traffic officials.

Operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, specifically the Ijesha Division, arrived shortly after to take over the scene and commence investigations. The remains of the deceased rider, along with the damaged motorcycle and tanker, were handed over to the police for further inquiry and possible prosecution.

The body of the victim was later evacuated to a morgue in Yaba.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as deeply distressing and extended condolences to the bereaved family. He also called for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident and ensure justice is served.

The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety and compliance with traffic regulations on Lagos highways, particularly involving heavy-duty vehicles.
