Power Output Plummets to 4,300 MW as Gas Supply Falls Short — NISO

Nigeria’s electricity generation has dropped sharply to an average of about 4,300 megawatts (MW), largely because gas supply to thermal power plants has fallen to less than 43 per cent of what is required, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) says.
In a statement released on Friday, NISO explained that thermal stations, which make up the bulk of the country’s generation mix, currently receive roughly 692 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. This is far below the 1,630 mmscf needed for optimal output, a shortfall of nearly 57 per cent of required volumes.
The fuel constraint, worsened by scheduled maintenance on key gas infrastructure, maintenance shutdowns and other supply challenges, has led to reduced allocation of electricity to Distribution Companies (DisCos) and compelled the operator to implement load-shedding measures to protect grid stability.
NISO said the situation has caused prolonged power outages nationwide, stressing that without adequate gas supply, generation levels will remain depressed despite significant installed capacity on the national grid.
The operator expressed regret for the inconvenience to consumers and said it is working with stakeholders to improve gas deliveries so that full energy allocation can be restored.
