NIMC Declares NIN Mandatory for 2026 SSCE Candidates

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reiterated that possession of a National Identification Number (NIN) is now compulsory for all candidates intending to sit the 2026 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) in Nigeria.
In an advisory posted on its official social media platform, NIMC described the NIN as a “critical academic tool” necessary not only for exam registration but also for school enrolments, scholarship applications and other government‑linked services.
To make registration more accessible, the commission said it has expanded its operations under a “Ward Enrollment Strategy”, bringing NIN enrolment centres closer to communities across the country ahead of the examination deadline.
Parents and guardians were urged to ensure that their children obtain a valid NIN and to accompany minors (under 16) to registration centres with relevant documents such as birth certificates, with NIMC stressing that the process is free at official centres.
The directive is part of ongoing efforts to integrate the national identity system more fully into public services and to prevent hurdles during major processes like national exams.
