Canadian Tech and Investment, Mining Sector Reforms

Nigeria’s Federal Government has signalled a strengthened push to revamp its mining industry by courting Canadian technology, expertise and investment, officials say, as part of broader plans to speed up reforms and unlock the sector’s economic potential.

At a meeting in Abuja with Canada’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, said Nigeria is ready to leverage Canada’s advanced mining technology and global expertise to accelerate sector reforms, attract more capital and deepen international best practices in the industry.

Alake highlighted the long-standing diplomatic ties between the two countries, recalling Canada’s support for Nigeria during its pro-democracy struggles and expressing a commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, especially in mining and mineral development.

The minister also reaffirmed Nigeria’s objective of building a transparent and investor-friendly mining environment, prioritising formalisation of artisanal mining, capacity building for professionals and enhanced regulatory oversight to reduce illegal operations and boost revenue generation.

Officials said the government has introduced incentives. This includes tax waivers on imported mining equipment and full repatriation of profits after statutory obligations to increase foreign direct investment and make Nigeria a more attractive destination for global investors.

The Canadian envoy welcomes Nigeria’s recognition of Canada’s leadership in the global mining industry and noted the potential to expand trade and investment cooperation, particularly in mining, given the scale of Nigeria’s mineral resources and Canada’s technological strengths.
