PDP Rift Widens as Makinde Supports Wike Peace Deal, Bala Opposes

The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified following a disagreement between Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed over a proposed reconciliation deal involving the camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Makinde and members of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) are backing a Court of Appeal-supported reconciliation initiative aimed at resolving the leadership crisis between the party’s factions.
However, Bala Mohammed, who also chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, reportedly rejected the peace arrangement, insisting he could not work with the Wike camp. His position has created a clear divide among key stakeholders within the opposition party.
The dispute follows a Court of Appeal ruling that nullified the PDP’s November 2025 national convention in Ibadan, which had produced Tanimu Turaki (SAN) and other members of the National Working Committee.
In response to the judgment, the PDP Board of Trustees announced plans to set up a special committee to engage party leaders and legal teams in order to broker reconciliation and stabilise the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party sources said the reconciliation proposal could include negotiations over leadership positions within the National Working Committee and the process for restoring unity within the party.
Meanwhile, Wike has expressed willingness to support reconciliation but insisted that any peace deal must be genuine and based on clear terms.
