Rivers Senator Banigo Dumps PDP for APC

Senator Ipalibo Banigo, who represents Rivers West Senatorial District, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Banigo announced the defection in a letter read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Tuesday.
In the letter, the lawmaker said her decision followed extensive consultations with constituents and political stakeholders, as well as ongoing internal divisions, leadership disputes, and litigations within the PDP.
She explained that the move was also intended to align politically with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and support the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Banigo further stated that her defection would enable her to work with key political figures, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, in backing Tinubu’s policies and reforms.
After the letter was read, Akpabio welcomed her to the ruling party, noting that a seat had already been prepared for her in the APC caucus.
The development is part of a series of recent political defections ahead of the 2027 general elections, as politicians reposition within major parties.
