Federal Secretariat Abuja

There was pandemonium at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja on Monday morning, March 9, 2026, as a fire outbreak razed a section of the massive complex. The inferno reportedly affected Block C, specifically the area housing the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF).

According to eyewitnesses, the fire was first noticed around 8:20 AM, just as civil servants were arriving to begin the work week. Thick plumes of black smoke were seen billowing from the building, prompting a hurried evacuation of staff and visitors. The incident caused significant disruption in the Three Arms Zone, leading to a diversion of vehicular movement from the Federal Court of Appeal area as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Firefighters from the Federal Fire Service (FFS) and the FCT Fire Service were deployed immediately to battle the blaze. While the fire caused substantial damage to the affected section, responders worked to prevent the flames from spreading to adjoining ministries. As of mid-morning, the exact cause of the fire had not yet been determined, and authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation once the situation is completely neutralized.

No casualties have been officially reported at this time, but the extent of the loss regarding documents and office equipment is expected to be significant.

Do you think the recurring fire outbreaks at government buildings point to a need for a total overhaul of the Federal Secretariat’s safety systems? Share your comments below!
