Oyo State’s Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has launched a major educational support drive by distributing core textbooks, school bags, sandals and other learning materials to public primary and junior secondary school pupils across the state.

The programme was officially flagged off on Friday at the OYOSUBEB headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan, marking the commencement of the 2024 FGN-UBEC/SUBEB intervention scheme designed to strengthen teaching and learning resources in schools.

At the event, SUBEB Chairman Dr. Nureni Adeniran outlined the extensive range of instructional materials handed out, including tens of thousands of Primary Mathematics and English textbooks, Nursery English and Mathematics books, Science and Technology volumes, 40,000 continuous assessment cards, and supplies such as exercise books, pencils, school bags and sandals for learners.

Adeniran emphasised that the materials are intended for active classroom use to improve instructional quality and student learning outcomes, urging school leaders and education managers to ensure strict accountability.

Representatives of UBEC at the ceremony highlighted that the distribution goes beyond mere provision of items, describing it as a renewed commitment to quality, inclusive basic education aligned with national priorities.

The intervention forms part of wider efforts to reduce barriers to education, especially for vulnerable families, by easing the financial burden of schooling and encouraging greater enrolment and retention.

Teachers and union leaders present at the event commended the initiative, noting that access to relevant learning materials will support teachers and pupils alike and contribute to better academic performance throughout the state’s public school system.
