Nigeria, Cameroon, Air Safety Agreement

In a significant move to strengthen aviation safety and emergency response coordination, Nigeria and Cameroon have signed a Bilateral Agreement on Technical Aeronautical Search and Rescue Operations. The agreement was formalised on Friday in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, during high-level discussions between both countries’ aviation ministers.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Cameroon’s Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest NgalNgallé Bibehe, led delegations to finalise the pact, which is aimed at enhancing cooperation across their shared airspace.

According to Keyamo, the agreement will enable faster and more coordinated responses to aviation emergencies, ensuring safety and efficiency when incidents occur near or along the common border. He shared news of the development on his official social media account on Saturday following the signing.

The framework brings together senior officials from both countries, including the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), who will be instrumental in its implementation.

The pact arrives amid ongoing efforts in West Africa to improve aviation safety standards, particularly in search and rescue operations. It represents a practical step towards strengthening cross-border aviation safety infrastructure, reflecting a shared commitment to protecting travellers and aircraft in the region.
