A promising medical student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, has died after collapsing during a clinical examination, sending shockwaves through one of the country's most prestigious academic institutions.

Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, a Part IV student in the College of Health Sciences, reportedly complained of chest pain during a clinical viva examination before losing consciousness.

His lecturers and fellow medical students, themselves training to save lives, immediately rendered assistance, but despite their prompt efforts and sustained attempts at resuscitation, Adewole could not be revived.

The university's spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the tragic development in an official statement on Thursday, 23 April 2026, describing the incident as a sudden and devastating loss for the entire OAU community.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Simeon Bamire, speaking on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, and the broader university family, extended heartfelt condolences to Adewole's parents, siblings, friends, and colleagues in the College of Health Sciences.

"The university management is currently engaging relevant authorities and the family to provide necessary support and to further understand the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident," the statement read.

The circumstances of Adewole's death, collapsing in an examination hall surrounded by medical personnel yet still beyond saving, have drawn an outpouring of grief across Nigerian social media and academic circles.

No foul play has been suggested, and the university has indicated that investigations are ongoing to fully establish the medical cause of death.

Do you think Nigerian universities are doing enough to monitor and protect the mental and physical health of students in high-pressure professional programmes or is student welfare still an afterthought in our academic institutions? Let's hear your thoughts in the comments.
