New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has visited the bike path entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge, where the city’s Department of Transportation (DOT) has begun work to fix a long standing surface defect commonly referred to by cyclists as “the bump.” The spot, located at a key access point to the bridge, has been a frequent concern for riders due to the risk it poses, especially during high traffic periods and wet conditions.
During the visit, Mamdani said the Williamsburg Bridge route is one he has personally used many times while cycling, giving him firsthand experience of the challenges riders face. DOT officials confirmed that the current intervention involves smoothing and resurfacing the affected section to reduce sudden elevation changes that can cause loss of control or accidents. The work is part of routine maintenance but was prioritised following repeated complaints from cyclists.
City transportation data shows the Williamsburg Bridge is one of the busiest cycling corridors in New York, carrying tens of thousands of riders weekly as it connects Manhattan and Brooklyn. DOT said crews are working to complete the repair quickly to minimise disruption while improving rider safety.
Mayor Mamdani noted that while the repair addresses an immediate issue, it represents only an initial step in a broader plan to improve street and cycling safety across the city. He said larger scale infrastructure upgrades, including better bike lane design and safer intersections, are expected as part of upcoming transportation projects.
