“Not Afraid of Being Sacked” — Justine Madugu Apologizes After Super Falcons Miss Out on 2027 World Cup

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has issued an official apology to Nigerians following the team's exit from the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and their subsequent failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The 10-time African champions suffered a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals before falling 2-1 to South Africa in the CAF playoff match in Morocco. The consecutive losses eliminated Nigeria from World Cup contention, marking the first time in history that the Super Falcons will not appear at the FIFA Women's World Cup since the tournament's inception in 1991.
Taking full responsibility for the campaign, Madugu offered his apologies to football fans across the nation:

“First of all, I have to apologise to Nigerians over our inability to make it to the World Cup. It was not our intention. We came and did the best that we could, but our best was not good enough. We are very sorry for that, and we take full responsibility for everything that happened.”

Amid mounting public scrutiny and calls for his dismissal by fans and commentators, Madugu addressed his job security with defiance, insisting he remains unbothered by potential action from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

“I am not afraid of being sacked. To the glory of God, I have served my country. It was a privilege that was given to me. So far, I have played almost 28 games, won 19, lost four and drawn four. But this defeat came at crucial moments that people did not expect.”
