Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, made history on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, defeating South American powerhouse Brazil 3–1 in Rabat, Morocco, to secure their spot in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time.
After a tense, goalless first half, head coach Akeem Busari’s side unleashed a dominant second-half performance. Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 56th minute off an assist from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi before Awawu Bashiru put the game out of reach with a sublime double in the 71st and 80th minutes. A late 89th-minute strike by Brazil's Greise Kelly proved to be a mere consolation as Nigeria held on for the emphatic win.
This marks the first time an African nation has qualified for the final of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, surpassing Nigeria's previous best finish of third place at the 2022 edition in India.
Confluence Queens midfielder Awawu Bashiru was named Player of the Match after netting her second-half brace.
Following an initial 2–1 group-stage setback against Poland, the Flamingos have gone on a five-match winning streak to reach the championship decider.
The Flamingos will now face Japan in the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat (7:30 PM WAT), as they chase their maiden world title.
