Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has released a detailed statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding his abrupt exit from the national team camp, attributing his departure to broken promises and a breakdown in trust with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The superstar disclosed that he had been persuaded to shelve retirement plans after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, agreeing with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and Jorge Jesus on a structured management plan for his minutes and role in the national team. However, tension erupted during Portugal's recent UEFA Nations League trip to Norway, where Ronaldo claims he was asked to warm up for 30 minutes in the second half but was left unused on the bench—a breach of their prior arrangement. After the match, Ronaldo admitted to walking straight off without acknowledging the supporters, calling it a personal mistake brought on by frustration for which he apologized to Portuguese fans.
“It was the second time he had broken his word to me. I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises... Activism and truth remain fundamental to me. However, if I am physically fit and scoring goals for my club, after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available as I have always been to compete and win for our national team.”

Ronaldo further alleged that despite a private follow-up meeting where Jesus acknowledged making a mistake by having him warm up without bringing him on, the coach’s subsequent press conference lacked the agreed frankness and tone, adopting an aggressive posture instead. Following Ronaldo's departure on the eve of Portugal's Nations League clash with Denmark, Jorge Jesus addressed reporters, describing the fallout as a solvable misunderstanding while expressing his desire for Ronaldo to remain a central figure in the squad moving forward.
