The Nigerian film industry has been plunged into mourning following the death of veteran actress and film director Oby Kechere. The news of her passing was officially confirmed on Saturday, May 2, 2026, by Uche Agbo, the National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN). According to the statement, the actress, who was a beloved figure in the industry, died on April 27, 2026, after battling a prolonged illness that had kept her away from the spotlight in recent times.

Oby Kechere, a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, was widely recognized for her iconic role as "Ms. Koi Koi" in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa. Her performance alongside Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme cemented her status as a household name in the early 2000s. Beyond her acting career, she was a dedicated professional who served as the Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter, where she was known for her commitment to the unity and growth of the guild.

Hailing from Mbaise in Imo State, Kechere first broke into Nollywood in 2001, making her debut in the popular August Meeting film series. Over the decades, she transitioned from being a recognizable face on screen to a respected director, contributing to the evolution of the Abuja filmmaking hub. Her colleagues have described her as a "committed professional" whose loss leaves a significant void in the creative community, particularly within the DGN family where she was a valued leader.

The DGN National Executive Council has extended its deepest condolences to her family and loved ones, urging the industry to remember her contributions to Nigerian cinema. As tributes continue to pour in from fans and colleagues, many are revisiting her classic scenes, celebrating a legacy that spanned over two decades of storytelling. Her passing marks the end of an era for one of the original stars of the Nollywood comedy boom.
