"Everyone Has Their Own Kingdom": Korra Obidi Says Nigerians Are Their Own Government

U.S.-based Nigerian dancer and singer Korra Obidi speaks on the resilience and struggles of Nigerians, asserting that citizens have essentially become their own providers due to the systemic failure of the state. Speaking in a recent episode of the One 54 podcast, the performer reflected on the current state of the nation, arguing that while Nigeria is a land of immense potential, it is being significantly hindered by a government that fails to perform its basic duties.
Obidi highlighted the survivalist nature of life in Nigeria, noting that the average citizen is forced to create a personal infrastructure that should ideally be managed by the public sector. "In Nigeria, you’re your own government," she stated, explaining that individuals are responsible for digging their own wells for water, generating their own electricity through solar or generators, and providing their own security. She described a society where people have essentially built their own "ministries" and "kingdoms" simply to survive and thrive amidst the lack of basic social amenities.
The dancer also touched on the geographical and demographic advantages of the country, particularly focusing on the growth of Lagos. She noted that despite predictions of flooding, the city continues to expand at an astronomical rate through land reclamation. With a population nearing 300 million and a youth-dominated demographic driving a booming tech sector, Obidi argued that the only thing standing in the way of a global explosion of Nigerian talent and productivity is the leadership.
Do you agree with Korra Obidi that Nigerians have become their own government, or do you think there is still a significant role the state plays in the lives of the average citizen? Share your comments below!
