The Nigerian Army has clarified reports surrounding the death of Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah following a deadly ambush by insurgents in Borno State, stating that details remain under verification.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade came under a coordinated attack at their base in Benisheikh in the early hours of April 9, 2026. According to military authorities, soldiers responded with “exceptional courage” and successfully repelled the attackers.
However, the Army noted that while casualties were recorded among personnel, it did not immediately confirm whether the brigade commander, Braimah, was among those killed at the time of its initial statement.
This clarification followed widespread reports suggesting that the senior officer had died during the assault. Local sources and officials had claimed that Braimah was among the casualties, although the military urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information.
The military described the attack as a sign of desperation by insurgents, who have reportedly suffered significant losses in recent operations. It also confirmed that some soldiers lost their lives in the confrontation while others sustained injuries.
Authorities added that clearance operations are ongoing to track fleeing insurgents and prevent further attacks in the region, reaffirming the Armed Forces’ commitment to combating terrorism in the North-East.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in Borno State, where military formations continue to face attacks from armed groups despite intensified counter-insurgency efforts.
