Medical Laboratory Scientists Reject Proposed Health Reform Bills, Warn of Sectoral Imbalance

Medical laboratory scientists in Nigeria have rejected the proposed health sector reform bills currently before the National Assembly, warning that the legislation could disrupt the existing structure of the country’s healthcare system.
The professionals, under the umbrella of health sector unions, expressed strong opposition to the bills, arguing that they could significantly alter the regulatory framework governing healthcare practice in Nigeria.
According to the stakeholders, the proposed reforms seek to place all medical professions under a single regulatory authority, a move they say would undermine the autonomy of established professional bodies.
They cautioned that such centralisation could create imbalance within the sector, potentially relegating other healthcare professionals, including medical laboratory scientists, to a subordinate position.
The group further argued that each health profession currently operates under its own regulatory council, a system designed to ensure specialised oversight, professional standards, and accountability within the industry.
The opposition forms part of a broader resistance by healthcare workers, who have staged protests to draw attention to the potential implications of the reform bills and to demand a reconsideration by lawmakers.
Stakeholders maintain that any reform of the health sector should be inclusive and preserve the independence of professional bodies to ensure efficiency, fairness, and quality service delivery across Nigeria’s healthcare system.
