Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte sustained a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup.

The injury occurred during Uruguay’s group-stage defeat to Spain after the 25-year-old landed awkwardly while attempting a tackle. Ugarte was unable to continue and left the pitch early in the match.

The club stated that further medical assessment will determine the appropriate treatment plan and recovery timeline. Reports indicate the midfielder could face an extended spell on the sidelines, although no official return date has been announced.

Ugarte is expected to return to Manchester for additional evaluation as the club monitors his rehabilitation.

The injury comes at a time when questions remain around his role at Old Trafford after limited involvement towards the end of the season.
