Argentine legend Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a legendary 21-year career with La Albiceleste. The 39-year-old icon confirmed the decision in an emotional statement following Argentina's campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Messi explained that after extensive reflection with his family and loved ones, he felt it was the right time to step aside and allow the next generation of Argentine talent to carry the national team forward. He emphasized that he leaves the national setup fulfilled, having achieved every major international honor—highlighted by Argentina's iconic 2022 FIFA World Cup victory in Qatar alongside two Copa América titles and the 2022 Finalissima.
“Thank you to my family for always being there, for accompanying me on this beautiful but difficult journey. Thank you to every coach, teammate and official I had the chance to share this journey with. I am taking with me unforgettable memories and moments... I leave with the peace of mind and pride of having given you, together with my teammates, moments we could only have dreamed of. It was crazy to experience it all with you. I love you! Thank you, God, for making me Argentine. Let's go, Argentina!”
— Lionel Messi
While his historic international career has concluded, Messi will continue playing at the club level with Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer, where his current contract runs through 2028.
