Lagos Targets Flood Prevention as Waste Clearance Drive Intensifies Across State

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling flooding, directing immediate evacuation of waste generated during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that operational teams had been mobilised across the state to ensure swift clearance of refuse. In a public update, he stressed that the same level of coordination used in encouraging residents to participate in sanitation efforts must be matched with rapid waste disposal.

According to him, authorities are closely monitoring activities, receiving regular updates from teams on the ground. The exercise involves multiple stakeholders, including the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), ministry enforcement units, private sector operators, and local government councils.

Beyond surface cleaning, the state is placing strong emphasis on clearing drainage systems, canals, and roadsides. This approach is aimed at reducing blockages that often contribute to flooding, especially as rainfall intensifies during the wet season.

Wahab noted that maintaining clean and unobstructed drainage channels remains one of the most effective ways to mitigate flood risks in urban areas like Lagos. He added that illegal dumping continues to pose a major challenge, urging residents to adopt responsible waste disposal habits.

The government also acknowledged the participation of residents in the sanitation exercise, describing collective action as essential to achieving a cleaner and safer environment.

With seasonal rains already gaining momentum, the renewed push shows the urgency of preventive measures and sustained environmental discipline across communities.

However, if a flood-free Lagos depends on collective responsibility, are residents truly doing enough beyond monthly sanitation exercises? Share your thoughts with us.
