The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, has ordered the suspension of commanders overseeing operations along the Lagos–Seme border corridor following allegations of extortion by personnel.
The decision comes in response to viral reports and online videos accusing officers stationed at the busy border route of harassing and extorting travellers. In reaction, Nandap directed that the affected commanding officers be relieved of their duties pending the outcome of an investigation.
In a statement issued by the service’s spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, the immigration boss strongly condemned the alleged misconduct, describing it as a violation of the agency’s core values and professional standards.
The statement noted that a comprehensive probe has been launched to identify all officers involved, with assurances that appropriate disciplinary measures will be enforced without delay. However, authorities did not disclose the exact number of officers affected or the specific commands involved.
The Lagos–Seme corridor, linking Nigeria to neighbouring Benin Republic, is one of West Africa’s busiest border routes, handling significant volumes of trade and passenger movement. It has also long been associated with complaints of extortion and harassment by security operatives.
The immigration service reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency and accountability, urging members of the public to report any misconduct through its official communication channels.
The latest action signals renewed efforts by the agency to restore public trust and enforce discipline among its personnel at critical entry and exit points.
