Lagos Airport Disrupted as APC Delegates Storm Abuja for National Convention

The local wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, witnessed significant disruptions on Friday morning, March 27, 2026. The congestion was triggered by a massive influx of All Progressives Congress (APC) members and delegates from the Lagos chapter traveling to Abuja for the party’s highly anticipated National Convention.
From as early as 6:00 am, the terminal was reportedly taken over by party faithful, creating long queues and slowing down check-in processes for other travelers. Prominent Lagos political figures were spotted among the crowd, including members of the influential Governance Advisory Council (GAC) such as Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon and former Deputy Governor Prince Abiodun Ogunleye. The surge in passenger volume led to delays in flight schedules, leaving some non-political travelers frustrated as the airport struggled to manage the sudden "sea of broom-wielding" delegates.
The National Convention, scheduled to take place at Eagle Square in Abuja from Friday, March 27, to Saturday, March 28, is expected to host over 8,400 delegates from across the 36 states. The event is a critical milestone for the ruling party, as it aims to elect a new set of national executives and solidify its internal structure ahead of the 2027 general elections. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other top government officials are already in the Federal Capital Territory for the gathering.
Do you think major political events should be held in ways that don't disrupt public infrastructure, or is this just an unavoidable part of the Nigerian political season? Share your comments below!
