Kebbi ADC demands Malami’s release, accuses EFCC of bias

Kebbi ADC

The Kebbi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the continued detention of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). At a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, the party accused the EFCC of acting with political bias and overstepping its legal mandate in holding Malami without formal charges. ADC officials described the detention as unconstitutional and called for his immediate release.

Sufyan Bala, Chairman of ADC in Kebbi, stated that the EFCC had “graduated from a law enforcement agency to the law itself” and that its actions undermine constitutional provisions and the rule of law. He argued that Malami’s detention appears politically motivated and aimed at intimidating opposition figures, especially with general elections scheduled for 2027. The party highlighted that no credible evidence had been publicly presented to justify holding Malami in custody.

The ADC also emphasised that Malami, a senior lawyer and political figure, had not been formally charged with any crime, raising concerns about due process and selective enforcement of anti-graft laws. Bala urged members of the party and supporters to remain calm and law-abiding while affirming ADC’s commitment to democratic principles and political participation. The party insisted that all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, deserve equal treatment under the law.

The EFCC has responded elsewhere by maintaining that it operates without political bias and that Malami’s detention relates to his failure to meet specific bail conditions, not his politics.
