Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has rejected calls for him to step down as the leading contender for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket, saying he will remain in the race despite pressure from some political allies. Atiku made his stance clear in a recent statement while also launching criticism at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the state of Nigeria’s economy and governance. His remarks mark a fresh escalation in the 2027 presidential contest, as opposition figures seek to unify forces against the ruling party. (punchng.com)

Atiku said he remains committed to contesting under the ADC banner after resigning from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) earlier in 2025 and joining the opposition coalition. He dismissed suggestions that he should relinquish his bid in favour of another aspirant, saying such calls were not grounded in national interest but in political expediency. Atiku also used the occasion to criticise President Tinubu, accusing him of failing to improve Nigeria’s economy, security situation and living standards since taking office.

In his attacks on Tinubu’s administration, Atiku highlighted issues such as inflation, unemployment and insecurity as evidence that Nigerians deserve a “new direction and leadership style.” He said that if elected, his government would prioritise economic revitalisation, job creation and inclusive governance. Atiku’s comments reflect growing friction between key political figures as the race for 2027 gains momentum, with rivals sharpening their critiques of the incumbent government.
