The political landscape in Nigeria has taken a major turn as Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 general elections. Baba-Ahmed, who served as the vice-presidential candidate for the Labour Party during the 2023 elections, made this announcement during a press conference where he outlined his vision for the country. He stated that his decision to run is born out of a desire to provide the leadership needed to rescue Nigeria from its current economic and social challenges. This move confirms that he is ready to step out from the shadow of his former principal, Peter Obi, to lead his own political movement.
During his declaration, Baba-Ahmed emphasized that he remains committed to the principles of transparency, accountability, and justice. He pointed out that the 2023 election was a significant turning point for many Nigerians who are hungry for real change, and he intends to build on that momentum. The founder of Baze University argued that Nigeria needs a leader with a deep understanding of education and economy to fix the foundational problems holding the nation back. He also took the time to reflect on his past experiences in the National Assembly, noting that his track record in public service makes him the right candidate for the job.
The announcement has already started to generate a lot of discussion within the Labour Party and across the broader political space in Nigeria. Many are wondering how this declaration will affect the relationship between him and Peter Obi, as well as the unity of the "Obidient" movement. While some supporters see his ambition as a natural progression, others are concerned about the possibility of a split in the opposition vote ahead of the 2027 polls. Baba-Ahmed, however, insisted that his ambition is not about personal gain but about offering Nigerians a credible alternative to the current ruling class.
Baba-Ahmed’s early declaration sets the stage for what promises to be a very intense and competitive primary season. He has called on his supporters and all Nigerians who believe in a "New Nigeria" to join him in this new journey to transform the country. With the official campaign season still some time away, the political atmosphere in Nigeria is already heating up as different groups begin to align themselves with various candidates.
