Kano Gov Reaffirms Commitment to Press Freedom, Journalists’ Welfare

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has pledged continued support for press freedom and better welfare for journalists in the state. His spokesperson and Director-General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, gave the assurance during a Tea Break session organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists.
Dawakin-Tofa dismissed claims that the administration intimidates journalists, insisting Yusuf remains one of the country’s most media-friendly governors. He said the state has never used security agencies or courts to harass reporters acting within the law.
He accused political opponents of spreading misinformation to discredit the government, noting that multiple awards—including the NUJ’s “Journalist-Friendly Governor” honour—affirm Yusuf’s support for the media.
The administration, according to him, is investing in training and capacity-building programmes through partnerships with agencies like NITDA, while also providing seasonal welfare support for journalists.
He added that the governor runs an open-door policy, encourages constructive criticism, and ensures access to information to strengthen transparency and accountability.
Journalists were urged to uphold professional ethics and view government as partners in delivering democratic dividends, not adversaries.
