Historically Brutal: Tunisia Sacks Sabri Lamouchi Just One Game Into 2026 World Cup

The Tunisian Football Federation (TFF) has taken the unprecedented step of sacking head coach Sabri Lamouchi just 24 hours after the team's humiliating 5–1 defeat against Sweden in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decisive action makes the 54-year-old former French international the first coach in World Cup history to be dismissed after managing only a single game at the finals. The federation immediately announced that two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner Hervé Renard has been appointed to take over the reins for the remainder of the tournament.

The thrashed Eagles of Carthage looked completely out of depth on Sunday night in Monterrey, trailing heavily as a clinical Swedish frontline ran riot.

“Starting the competition with this bad of a loss is indeed difficult. We made too many mistakes, and this is not something that we can do. We are shooting ourselves in the foot, we are hurting ourselves,” Lamouchi admitted in a painful post-match press conference before his dismissal.

Pressure had been building on Lamouchi long before the tournament kicked off in North America. The Tunisian side suffered a heavy 5–0 defeat at the hands of Belgium in their final warm-up friendly earlier this month, sparking deep panic within the federation's technical committee about the squad's defensive vulnerability.

In a bid to salvage their campaign, Tunisia has turned to Frenchman Hervé Renard, a managerial heavyweight renowned for engineering legendary international upsets. Renard famously masterminded Saudi Arabia's shocking 2–1 group-stage victory over eventual champions Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Renard is expected to fly directly into Mexico to take immediate charge of training ahead of a must-win clash. The Tunisian federation confirmed that the short-term deal includes clauses to open negotiations for a long-term contract extension depending on specific performance milestones achieved during the tournament.

Tunisia faces an uphill battle to escape the group as they prepare to take on Japan on Sunday, June 21, before facing the Netherlands on June 26 in their final group fixture.

What are your thoughts on Tunisia's radical decision to fire their coach after just one game? Do you think Hervé Renard can perform another World Cup miracle and rescue the Eagles of Carthage from group-stage elimination? Readers, please share your comments below!
