“Heartbroken” — Inquest Confirms Mark Hughes’s Son Alex Hughes Died of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome

An inquest at Cheshire Coroner's Court has confirmed that Alex Hughes, son of former Manchester United and Wales football legend Mark Hughes, died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). The 38-year-old, who served as the player recruitment lead for Grimsby Town, was found collapsed at his home in Macclesfield on June 19. Despite immediate resuscitation attempts and emergency medical intervention, paramedics confirmed his passing at the scene. Coroner Victoria Davies recorded a verdict of natural causes after a post-mortem examination and cardiac pathology report revealed no structural abnormalities or underlying medical issues.

Following a brief playing career with Stockport County and Wrexham, Alex built a respected career behind the scenes in football analysis and recruitment. He previously held analyst and recruitment roles at Manchester City, Fulham, Blackburn Rovers, and 1860 Munich before joining Grimsby Town. According to the British Heart Foundation, SADS (also known as Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome) occurs when an undetected cardiac arrhythmia leads to sudden cardiac arrest in a structurally normal heart, affecting roughly 500 people annually in the UK.
