Peter Akpe, Bayelsa Deputy Governor

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has received the newly appointed Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Pastor Peter Akpe, PhD, at his residence in Yenagoa, signalling a show of support following the state’s recent leadership transition.

The courtesy visit on Saturday came shortly after Akpe’s confirmation and swearing-in, which followed the death of the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on 11 December 2025.

Sharing details of the meeting on his official X account, Jonathan described the reception as a pleasure and commended Akpe for the respectful gesture. He extended his best wishes for success as the new deputy governor begins his tenure serving the people of Bayelsa State.

Akpe’s swearing-in took place on Wednesday at the Bayelsa State Executive Council chamber in Yenagoa, where Governor Senator Douye Diri also inaugurated four commissioners and 14 permanent secretaries. During the oath-taking, Governor Diri highlighted the solemn responsibilities associated with the position and spoke about the constitutional process that led to Akpe’s confirmation by the State House of Assembly.

The new deputy governor is expected to complete the remaining two years of the current administration’s term, bolstering the state leadership following the recent loss in office.
