Engineers Urge Swift Action on Ogun Power Reform to Avoid Regulatory Gaps

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta branch, has warned against delays in implementing Ogun State’s electricity reform, stressing that any setback could undermine effective regulation and consumer protection.
In a statement issued by its chairman, Olumayowa Idowu, the professional body commended the Ogun State Government for inaugurating a 15-member administrative team for the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission, describing it as a significant step towards enforcing the state’s electricity law.
The NSE noted that the move aligns with efforts to operationalise the Ogun State Electricity Law (Bill No. 017/OG/2024), initiated under Governor Dapo Abiodun. It added that the reform is critical to improving power supply, ensuring fair tariff regulation, and strengthening electricity governance across the state.
However, the engineers cautioned that the implementation process is time-sensitive. They warned that any delay in activating the regulatory framework could create gaps in oversight, affecting key areas such as licensing, tariff regulation, dispute resolution, and overall consumer protection.
The group referenced a directive by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which mandates the transition of regulatory authority to state electricity commissions, with the process expected to have been completed between December 2024 and June 2025.
While applauding the progress made so far, the NSE urged the state government to accelerate the full establishment and operation of institutions outlined in the law. It also called for clearly defined timelines for launching the state electricity market and for broader stakeholder engagement throughout the reform process.
The engineers further emphasised that timely execution of the reform would unlock economic and industrial benefits, including improved energy reliability, increased investor confidence, and better service delivery for residents and businesses.
Additionally, the NSE stressed the importance of professionalism in managing the new regulatory framework, advising the government to appoint qualified and experienced engineers to key roles to ensure efficiency and sustainable growth in the sector.
The body reaffirmed its readiness to support the Ogun State Government with technical expertise to ensure the successful implementation of the electricity reform agenda.
