The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a 26-year-old teacher, Udeme Monday Stephen, after he publicly claimed responsibility for a violent incident involving former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in Benin City, Edo State and issued further threats against him.
Stephen was taken into custody after posting on X that he and his “associates” were behind the gunfire attack on the African Democratic Congress secretariat and the residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
Mr Obi, alongside Chief Odigie-Oyegun and other political figures including Olumide Akpata, was present during the incident but was not harmed.
In his post, Stephen claimed Mr Obi had been “fortunate to survive” the attack and warned that he “would not be that lucky next time”, signalling further intent to target him during a planned visit to Rivers State.
Security sources say DSS operatives used forensic and covert investigation methods to trace and arrest the suspect in connection with the online threats. He is currently in custody and expected to face charges as the investigation continues.
