Anambra Government, February Salaries, Monday Sit-at-Home

The Anambra State Government has cut the February salaries of civil servants who failed to attend work on Mondays, after workers skipped duty in observance of the Monday sit-at-home directive in parts of the state.

The move follows a decision to pay salaries on a pro-rata basis, meaning workers lose pay for days they do not report for duty, especially Mondays that were widely missed because of the unrest linked to the controversial sit-at-home campaign.

State authorities, speaking through the Commissioner for Information, said the policy was agreed at the end-of-tenure retreat of the Anambra Executive Council and is aimed at encouraging civil servants to resume normal duties on Mondays.

The government noted that many workers stayed home on Mondays over security fears and the persistent sit-at-home order, despite improvements in conditions, and had effectively been paid full salaries even when absent. Under the new arrangement, salaries are calculated based on the actual number of days worked in the month.

Officials say the deductions are meant to increase productivity, halt revenue loss and discourage absenteeism, without resorting to harsher disciplinary sanctions in the civil service rules. The policy has confirmed that workers who do not clock in and out on Mondays will forfeit pay for that day.
