Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced the former Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, to a total of 75 years in prison for his involvement in a massive $N33.8$ billion fraud. Mamman, who served under the previous administration, was found guilty of money laundering and criminal diversion of funds meant for major power projects, including the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project. The court delivered its verdict after a long-running legal battle led by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which provided evidence of how the former minister used several proxy companies to siphon public money.
Presiding Judge, Justice James Omotosho, handed down the sentence after convicting Mamman on 15 separate counts of corruption. Each count carried a five-year sentence, totaling 75 years, though the sentences are expected to run concurrently. This means the former minister will spend several years behind bars. The judge emphasized that the sentence was intended to serve as a strong warning to public officials that the days of looting the national treasury with impunity are over. In addition to the jail term, the court ordered the forfeiture of several properties and luxury assets linked to the former minister.
Mamman was originally arrested in 2021 shortly after he was removed from office by the President, and his trial has been one of the most high-profile corruption cases in recent Nigerian history. As of the time of the ruling, his legal team has indicated their intention to appeal the judgment.
