The Canadian government has deported 366 Nigerian nationals for violating immigration laws, while 974 others are currently awaiting removal, authorities reported. The deportation exercise forms part of Canada’s continued enforcement of immigration regulations, targeting individuals who overstayed visas, breached residency conditions, or otherwise failed to maintain lawful status. Canadian immigration officials said the operations were conducted using established legal processes and in cooperation with Nigerian authorities where necessary. (punchng.com)
According to data published by Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board and related agencies, the 366 Nigerians were returned to Nigeria under scheduled flights from different regions of Canada. Deportation procedures involve identity verification, security screening and coordination with foreign missions to ensure safe repatriation. Deportees were accompanied by Canadian immigration officials and handed over to Nigerian authorities upon arrival, where they underwent further screening and documentation before release.
Meanwhile, immigration records show that 974 Nigerians remain in detention centres or under monitoring as they await removal orders. These individuals include those whose appeals against deportation were rejected and those currently going through final stages of judicial review. Canadian immigration authorities emphasised that all cases are being processed in accordance with domestic legislation, which allows for legal appeals and access to counsel before removal decisions are enforced.
The Nigerian High Commission in Canada has been notified and is expected to provide consular support to deportees and those pending removal.
