Blessing Ogundiran

United States based sprinter, Blessing Ogundiran, has emerged as Nigeria's new national champion after winning the women's 100 meters race on Monday evening. The talented athlete put up a brilliant performance at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, where the national trials for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games are currently taking place. Ogundiran ran a fast time of 11.12 seconds to outpace her tough rivals and secure the highly coveted gold medal.

The race was very competitive as teenage sensation, Miracle Ezechukwu, pushed the winner all the way to finish in second place with a new career best time of 11.15 seconds. Ezechukwu's impressive performance also earned her the benchmark for the Ben Aghazu Excellence in Athletics Prize, which is an initiative set up to reward outstanding home-based athletes. Another United States based track star, Olayinka Olajide, completed the top three positions on the podium after stopping the clock at 11.28 seconds.

Speaking to sports journalists after her big victory, Ogundiran revealed that she had to overcome a very stressful four day journey from America due to weather storms before arriving in Lagos for the competition. She stated that her coach advised her to stay focused on her race execution and not panic at the starting block, which was exactly what gave her the win. In other events of the day, Olympian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi threw 21.46 meters to win the men's shot put title for a record fifth consecutive time.
