Ben Murray-Bruce Reveals Why Rotimi Amaechi And Five Governors Dumped Goodluck Jonathan In 2015

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has revealed the core reasons why the former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, alongside four other influential governors, dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2015 general elections. Murray-Bruce shared these insider details on Monday, June 29, 2026, during an appearance on a popular political program. His revelations shed fresh light on one of the biggest political defections in Nigeria’s modern democratic history.

According to Murray-Bruce, the massive fallout was not primarily driven by ideological differences, but by a severe breakdown in communication, internal high-handedness, and a failure to manage powerful egos within the ruling party at the time. He explained that Amaechi and the other governors—who eventually formed the "g7" faction before defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC)—felt completely marginalized and disrespected by the national leadership of the PDP and certain powerful figures surrounding President Jonathan. Murray-Bruce noted that if the presidency had shown better diplomatic tact and accommodated the grievances of these state executives, the historic collapse of the PDP in 2015 could have been completely avoided.

The former senator further disclosed that several backroom peace meetings were held to resolve the bitter feud between President Jonathan and Governor Amaechi, but deep-seated suspicion and bad advice from political hardliners on both sides frustrated those reconciliation efforts. The mass defection of the governors ultimately tilted the political balance of power, leading to the PDP losing the presidency for the very first time since 1999. Murray-Bruce urged current political leaders across all parties to learn from the errors of 2015, emphasizing that arrogance and a lack of internal democracy will always ruin a political party.
