Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde Reportedly Set to Exit PDP Ahead of 2027

Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a potential existential crisis following reports on Monday, March 9, 2026, that two of its most prominent governors—Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State—are preparing to defect from the party.

Governor Seyi Makinde, often seen as a leader of the southern caucus, and Governor Bala Mohammed, a powerful voice in the North, represent significant voting blocs. Their exit would not only deplete the PDP's ranks of sitting governors but also significantly weaken its fundraising and mobilization capabilities across two geopolitical zones. For many party loyalists, the potential loss of these "heavyweights" feels like a final blow to a party already reeling from years of fractionalization and legal battles.

As the 2027 election cycle begins to take shape, the potential desertion of the PDP by its star performers highlights the volatile nature of Nigerian party politics. If the defections are finalized, the PDP may find itself entering the next election season as a shadow of its former self, forcing the opposition to completely rethink its strategy against the incumbent administration. All eyes are now on the PDP National Working Committee to see if a last-minute reconciliation is possible or if the "umbrella" is truly beyond repair.

Do you think the PDP can survive the exit of its top governors, or is this the beginning of the end for the former ruling party? Share your comments below!
