ADC Announces 40% Reservation of Party Positions for Women

In a significant move to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD), the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced a landmark policy to reserve 40% of all party leadership positions for women. The announcement, made on Sunday, March 8, 2026, positions the ADC as a frontrunner in the push for affirmative action within Nigeria’s political landscape, surpassing the 35% National Gender Policy benchmark that many advocacy groups have long championed.

The party’s leadership stated that this decision is not merely a symbolic gesture for IWD but a strategic institutional reform aimed at deepening democracy and ensuring that women have a "seat at the table" where critical decisions are made. By enshrining this quota within its internal structure, the ADC hopes to break the "glass ceiling" that has historically limited female participation to secondary roles, such as "Woman Leader" positions, rather than core executive or decision-making slots.

The ADC’s 40% reservation is seen as a direct challenge to the ruling APC and the main opposition PDP to move beyond rhetoric and implement concrete structural changes. Party officials emphasized that the policy will apply across all levels—from ward executives to the National Working Committee—ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As political parties begin to structure their platforms for the next election cycle, the ADC’s proactive stance on gender inclusion could make it an attractive destination for female aspirants who feel marginalized in larger parties. The success of this policy will likely be measured by how many women emerge as candidates for elective offices, but for now, the ADC has set a new standard for political inclusivity in Nigeria.

Do you think a 40% quota is enough to change the face of Nigerian politics, or do women still face too many external barriers to truly lead? Share your comments below!
