Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has opened up about her recent move to New York City, explaining that the relocation reflects both her artistic ambitions and personal comfort. Speaking in an interview, she said she officially moved to New York less than two months ago but that her spirit had long felt at home there. She described New York as reminding her so much of Lagos — with its energy, pace, and large African diaspora — which made the transition feel natural.

Ayra Starr said she first felt drawn to New York during past visits and stage performances. She recalled that during a concert she sensed a moment of clarity, a “sonder,” when she realised the city captured the vibe that resonates with her. That experience made her consider relocating seriously. The fact that many Nigerians and Africans already live there contributed to her feeling of belonging.

Beyond familiarity, she framed the move as a strategic step for her career. New York’s vibrant global music culture offers opportunities for broader exposure, collaborations, and growth — helping her refine her sound and reach international audiences. She stressed that even while relocating, she would remain true to her roots. Afrobeats for her is more than a genre — it is part of her identity, culture, and mission. She said her goal is to carry that heritage wherever she goes.

What do you think — do you believe this move will help Ayra Starr break even bigger globally, or do you fear it might distance her from her Nigerian fan base? Share your thoughts in the comments.
