WHO Raises Alarm Over Rising Nicotine Addiction Among Children Using E-Cigarettes

The World Health Organization (WHO) cautioned that the increasing use of e-cigarettes among children is fuelling a new wave of nicotine addiction, threatening decades of public health gains.
According to the WHO, at least 15 million children worldwide are using e-cigarettes, and in countries with available data, youth are on average nine times more likely than adults to vape. The UN agency criticised the aggressive marketing of these devices, often framed as harm-reduction tools, for hooking younger and previously non-smoking consumers instead.
While e-cigarettes do not produce tar or carbon monoxide like conventional cigarettes, WHO emphasises they typically contain nicotine, a substance known to impair adolescent brain development and lead to lifelong addiction.
The WHO urged governments to enact stronger regulatory controls on e-cigarette sales, marketing, flavouring, and nicotine concentrations to prevent youth uptake and protect public health.
