China, Nigeria, Diagnostics, Investment

The Federal Government says its latest engagements in China have yielded major gains for Nigeria’s healthcare sector, including a discounted diagnostics agreement and renewed investment commitments. The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare announced on Wednesday that the deals reflect global confidence in Nigeria’s ongoing health reforms.

During a visit to PlusLife Diagnostics in Guangzhou, Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Pate, secured a commitment for subsidised mass procurement of point-of-care diagnostic equipment for tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases through the UN StopTB Global Drug Facility. According to the ministry, the move will expand affordable testing and reduce out-of-pocket medical costs under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative.

PlusLife also pledged to begin local manufacturing in Nigeria between 2026 and 2028—aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Executive Order eliminating taxes and duties on pharmaceutical and diagnostic inputs.

Speaking at the Sino-Africa Healthcare Cooperation Forum in Beijing, Pate said the reforms are driving investor confidence, improving access to healthcare and positioning Nigeria as an emerging regional hub for pharmaceutical production and diagnostic technology.

He added that Nigeria’s health sector is being redesigned to support economic growth, innovation, and stronger national health security.
