Authorities in Cross River State have triggered emergency health protocols following the isolation of a Chinese national at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH). The individual was reportedly admitted and placed in a specialized isolation ward on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, after exhibiting symptoms that raised concerns among medical staff.

While the patient’s samples have been collected for definitive testing, the hospital management has urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. The state’s epidemiologist and the Ministry of Health are said to be working in close coordination with the NCDC to monitor the situation and conduct contact tracing where necessary. Medical professionals at UCTH have assured residents that they are following standard international biosafety procedures to manage the case while waiting for the official laboratory results.

Do you believe our health facilities are better prepared to handle a viral scare today than they were in 2020, or are there still major gaps in our emergency response? Share your comments below!
