The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has confirmed an imported case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, triggering immediate public health measures and intensive contact tracing.
The patient, an adult female who recently returned to Nigeria from Uganda, developed symptoms on October 7 and subsequently sought medical attention at a private health facility in Abuja. Following laboratory confirmation, health authorities swiftly initiated outbreak response protocols, identifying 44 close contacts—including healthcare workers, hospital patients, caregivers, and fellow air travelers—who are now under active surveillance.
“The patient is stable, and we are doing everything possible to ensure that we contain this through tracing all the contacts that this individual may have had... We advise everyone to remain calm but vigilant. There is no need for panic.”
— Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare via Voice of Nigeria
The Minister assured the public that Nigeria’s emergency response machinery—fortified by public health infrastructure built during previous containment successes—has been fully deployed to prevent further transmission. Healthcare facilities nationwide have been placed on high alert to maintain strict infection prevention protocols, while citizens are urged to adhere to basic hygiene practices and report any suspected symptoms to the NCDC toll-free line (6232).
